A pure potstill rye whisky from innovative Dutch distillers Zuidam, Millstone Dutch Rye 100 is made in small batches and aged for five years in American oak casks before bottling. Time for a Dutch Manhattan!
“Millstone Dutch Rye Whisky 100” is distilled from Rye grain and Malted Rye grain mash at the Zuidam distillery in small pot stills. The Rye Whisky is aged for 60 months in 190 liter charred new American oak barrels at 120 proof; after that it is transferred from the barrels to a holding tank, diluted to 50% alcohol by volume and filtered.
Zuidam uses traditional windmills to mill the grains. In using windmills the distillery helps preserve the important Dutch heritage of the world famous windmills. Even more importantly, this traditional way of milling causes almost no increase in the temperature of the grain and thus helps preserve the wonderful aromas.
Nose: Rich and welcoming, but complex, with some candy stick, sandalwood, leather saddle and soft toffee. Some musk and five spice in the mix.
Palate: some youthful notes but with a beguiling mix of candy stick, glacé cherries, sweet corn, mint toffee, hickory, and raspberries.
Finish: rich, full and sweet with only a nod to spicy rye.
